Am. Lit. Per. 2 & 4 (Period 2/4) Assignments

Due day 1: Work on projects, be ready for final reading quizzes. Turn in books also.

Reading quiz--chapter 8. Bring soaps and all handouts for the research paper including the research paper itself.  This is essential and you will not get a re-write grade without bringing all notes, early drafts, current drafts, and clear questions from reading the my notes to you. (especially what you are not sure about--including questions on specific comments from me.)

Work on your research paper, many need to find more than the single source you are using, many don't have a single quote. Find texts that support your argument and employ with great care!   No quiz on Blink till next week.
Day 3/synthesis portion will be given.

Due day one after the break: Research fact cards, notes, print outs of web pages for the first step in your research paper.  You may email me if you don't have a topic! You need a minimum of 5 fact cards to 10 fact cards from one source, and 5 or more from another source. Be sure to include the author or url address if a web source. 

Due day one or day 2: Outline on Modernism page 992-994 in text, should be clearly written, typed or hand written---use bullets and indent for each sub-topic.This is in textbook.
Have your topic ready, begin working on fact cards, have 10 facts from a book or source such as a reliable newspaper, etc.

Period 4 Final Wed, 17 of March, please have book ready to turn it.

Final Exam for period 2, day 2 Tues March 16. Please have books ready to turn it.

Due day ONE of the 2nd week of MARCH, basic notes on your project and a text or print out of an article. 

Period 4 must turn in EWG "books" for full credit on day one.
All classes must be ready for a final exam day 2 this week!

Due day 3: Both Periods, you should have post-its for quotes and passages to support your thesis for the in-class essay which will be due at the end of the period. We will not have the final exam until next week day 1.
Also, the project is due--so bring in the cover art and the journals. I did not pass out some journals in PERIOD 4, so you might have an extension this weekend, but you must have your cover art to show day 3.
ALL PERIODS, keep working on your research project by just reading and taking notes for your self chosen project.

All cover art is a day late if turned in my DAY 2.  No projects will be accepted w/out cover art and day 2 is the last chance to have that graded.  Spend some time on this, homeroom art is not going to be graded. 75 points.

Weekend homework: Study for final exam. Your cover for the final 'book/magazine' is due day 3: think of a title or type of magazine, headlines, and photos that would represent the characters. You may use collage or art!

Due day 3: read chapter 16 and be sure you have carefully read chapters 12-15. Quiz! GET a book or hard copy for your area of interest, we will be narrowing your topic, so spend some time on Googe and looking for info; be sure to take notes. 

Due day 3: Reading quiz chapters 13-16 and vocab quiz, you should know the first column as well on the SAT list. 

Due day one: write 2 journal entries for chapter 13-15, this time be sure to include any vocabulary words in the reading.
Spend time working on your research project by going reading and following the web pages and links on the subject, but begin to narrow your topic.

Due day one: read ch. 13-15 and create 2 journals w/quotes and sections for each chapter.
Study root terms and first list of SAT words. Work on basic background info gathering for your research paper by using Google and looking for good websites.

Write 10 sentences from SAT list and look up each word, write similar words as well and study your Root list. 

OK, tomorrow is the reading quiz for ch. 6-12, re-read carefully! 10 sentences are due as is the root word handout on greek/latin roots completed both sides.

Words to know....'foreshadow'

Read ch. 8-12 and write two journal full pages.  Combine ch. 8,9,10 into one journal and 11-12 into another journal.  Add two quotes and write a short summary for each chapter on each--8-10 and 11-12. (20 points) Study root words and begin basic research investigation if you are planning to do your own topic on a research paper. 

Read ch. 6 and complete a journal entry w/ a quote, a drawing, question for discusion and summary. Honors should be a FULL PAGE! All other classes need 3/4 page. READ ch. 7 too.

Final Exam: 50 points! Know these literary terms: allusion, figurative language (metaphor, simile, personification) imagery(from concrete detail, sensory description), diction (word choice) syntax (sentence and language structure--italics, paragraphs, visuals on a page). Know 3 types of characterization, and the 5 types of sentences. Read carefully ch. 1-5. Test will take 45 min. to an hour. There will be a short writing aspect except in Honors which of course will be longer and more demanding. :)

Read all of chapter 3,4,5 and complete a journal entry for each where you summarize and find a specific quote. Draw a metaphor also and explain it. 

Periods 2,4 read ch. 2, 3, and 4 and find a quote for each chapter and briefly summarize a paragraph per chapter. You must use post-its to show language, metaphor, imagery, and questions you have about the text.  

Due Day 3: Complete all questions on handout for chapter 2. Read up to chapter 4.

Ongoing--Summaries for the 'book' that you will compile for a final grade: Write ds a summary of each chapter--one paragraph w/a variety of sentences and a quote. Illustrate with a drawing from the chapter.

Vocabulary list 14 is due on day 3: Verbs only/we will have an open book exam on that day.

Due the first day back--a full page response to the handout on chapter 1. How the attitudes of the towns folk of Eatonville are characterized and how Janie is characterized. How are they different/can they live together is such a small town.
Read ch. 1, use post-its to mark questions, characteristics, metaphors, and be sure to doodle or draw these symbols on the journal. If they are big, you will need to write more--about 300 words. (15 pts)
Outline is due at end of week--click on links about Hurston.

All posters/art projects due! Don't loose 100 points and get it into class.
10 sentences are due on day 3 from "to be" list using type 2-5 sentences as shown in the class discussion.
Outline due on Monday: begin using research info on this site to be posted Wed this week.
Honors must be typed, two pages min. Regular classes are 1 and 1/2 pages. More details will be posted later.

Be sure to bring in your art/outside book project on day one. Here is the handout if you lost it! Have a great break. I'll be on vacation and won't be answering email.

Due Friday, Midnight--a typed report on 10 events based on your personal reading book. You will need to cite pages for each event. You should write a reflection on the process, what you learned by doing the artistic/visual version of the book. You may include if the book was interesting, why or why not, and what you learned from it. 2 pages/100 points.
The art project is due on the first day of school.

Extra Credit topics on a research paper are due on Day 3.

Due day 1: Final Exam will be day one and day 2. Extra credit rough draft due on day one also, but make sure you type it--1-2 pages with thesis based on your theme of your group is best. Find 2 quotes that you can use to support your theme. Example: Hysteria causes the entire town to destroy innocent lives....etc. Then write a topic sentence that shows this in the body paragraph and use a quote: an example is when..."quote"(p.24). then comment on this or explain it--basically use the say/mean/matter and you will be on task! The final draft is due on turnitin on day 3 this week(50 points)

Final Exam: study characters, important themes, significant passages, characterization types, static vs. dynamic characters.

All 11th graders have vocabulary quiz and 10 new sentences due. Honors need to have a full rough draft with 2 pages and several quotes from the play.  Outside quotes and sources are welcome, but be sure to cite your sources.

Due day 3; bring pictures/magazines/art items/quotes from a song, famous person, for your poster group.....think of ideas for your skit/musical/etc.

ALL CLASSES MUST KNOW THESE THEMES AND WRITE QUESTIONS ABOUT UNIVERSAL THEMES FOR SOCRATIC SEMINAR. HONORS CLASSES SHOULD REFERENCE EXACT QUOTES FOR THE SEMINAR. EACH CLASS HAS A DIFFERENT DUE DATE--CHECK IT OUT.

These are the themes to The Crucible:
Mass Hysteria--people loose all sense of rational thought when they are in hysteria; thus, the larger the crowd, the greater the damage.
Personal Tragedy/Redemption--through the trials of the Crucible, damaged relations can heal if people are willing to forgive. However, many people in any society are affected from a single bad relationship or other personal tragedy. (Alcoholism, Cancer, job loss)
Absolute Theocracy--people/governments who try to create heaven on earth often damage lives and actually create a living hell.
Authority--The old saying "Question Authority" is valid universally. Too much power often corrupts those who possess it.
Justice--IF you have any of the above issues in a society, you will be hard pressed to get justice. Why?

Socratic Seminar Task: all students must write 6 Socratic seminar questions (typed preferred) to be part of seminar. 15 points plus 15 points for discussion. Act 1-3 should be included, but universal themes also OK, such as does justice really exist/or any thematic question that is open ended. So make sure you also discuss level one questions on the book also, so write one question at least from the play. Example, why does the town trust Abigail? etc.
THIS will only happen if 99 percent of students do the questions. Otherwise, its a no go. Test will be in its place.
Also, get a SSR book by day 1 this week/bring to class. If you are not sure, email me for approval.

Read Act carefully--pay attention to characterization--begin to predict who will accuse who of false crimes.

Due Friday: Read up to page 40 in Act One and find 10 characters, use three methods (one method is OK per character) Be sure to cite text, "...use ellipses to 'cut out' just the quote you need" to support your opinion--then determine if the character is credible/reliable or not. Does not have to be long--keep each description within 3-4 written lines.

DUE WED, NOV 11 on Turnitin. Topic? Pick any or write your own. What is evil? Are we responsible for actions (think Puritan handouts) Should we 'stop' it? Why is there so much emphasis on serial killers type movies/TV shows. ETC> All responses should be written in fluid, full paragraphs and should be appropriate to be read in class. (20pts)

CREATE One Pager Graphic Journal: Find an image, text, poem, or a movie that you have seen and create a graphic or reflective journal! This should have an excerpt from the text, a specific scene of a movie/TV show written accurately by you, or an image. THEN, using COSTA 3 Levels of questions, ask a question from any of the 3 levels and answer yourself. You might not be able to completely answer them, so open ended questions are OK. Be sure to reflect as you go, just like a journal.

Read to ch. 5 in F. Douglass--Write 1 and 1/2 pages of your "Hobby-Passion" essay of free-write. You write on your hobby w/out any regards to grammar or punctuation. Hand or typed o.k. Also, complete one graphic "web" or bubble thinking map. Of course, write/find ten sentences/new words due day 3.

Due day 3: Vocabulary words and sentences from any source--they should be words you don't know! You will be tested on them from your notes day 3.
Read ch. 1, F. Douglass and write a 250 word response based on the Journal Handout---find 2 quotes and write a reaction, comment, analysis, or how ever you wish for now.

Here is the entire book of F. Douglass--however it is an older version and reads slightly different. Honors Classes must read on line or get their own book by next week. Read ch. 1-2 and begin brainstorming your group project on genocide.

Period 2 only day 2: Using the "Journal Response" handout and the Douglas
text, write a 250 word journal. You may use any of the four prompts: 1. What would you do if you were in Douglass' shoes? ; 2) What would you do if you were a slave owner at the time? 3). What role did the 'root' play, if any? 4) Does karma exist? If it does, why would this passage be proof or if it does not, what can we learn from the passage. (20pts) Due day 2.

Unit: Conflict and Expansion--Read over time line on page 556-557 then create an informal outline on pages 559,560,562--you may use bullets or summary or both.

Due day 3, read Douglass's piece on 563 in text and find 3 passages that strike you--write a reaction to 2 of them--consider imagery, connotations, and the end of the piece. Due day 3 as well as your personal vocabulary list. 10 words, sentences.

Write 1 page reflection on the write/read around and the passages we analyzed. What did you learn? What does working in a group reveal? What about the text piece it self? ?Syntax, Diction, images?
