Do not expect to understand it fully the first time through. Re-read it slowly. Pull the sentences apart. Put as much effort into this reading as you put into figuring out a math problem or understanding a scientific concept. Focus on plot and character and what Grendel learns in each chapter. Don't worry about understanding all of the philosophy in the book.
