We will have our Othello exam on Thursday, 12/5/2013.  I recommend you re-read the play and/or watch a filmed version of it.  The 1995 Othello starring Laurence Fishburne (123 minutes) is probably your best choice.

Due:

Assignment

Please submit the following three components to turnitin.com for your independent reading project.

1. Write a one-paragraph character sketch of the work’s protagonist. This should include discussion of the character’s goals, the conflicts experienced reaching those goals, and the character’s reaction to those conflicts. The goal here is to prepare you to write about the character as succinctly as possible in the AP exam.

2. Write a multi-paragraph essay in which you identify and support a major theme in the work. Be sure that your theme is not just a topic (e.g., don’t just say “love”; what about love?). Be sure that your support includes specific evidence (important scenes, character arc, etc.) The goal here is to explore the meaning of the work as a whole and investigate how the write conveys his/her ideas. (2-3 pages)

3. Write a brief paragraph in which you state whether or not you enjoyed reading this work, and why. The goal here is to reflect on the reading experience that you have just (hopefully!) enjoyed.

Write a one-paragraph close reading of the following speech performed by the Chorus in lines 829-837. Identify the cautionary message that Sophocles is conveying, being sure to identify his use of literary devices (such as personification and metaphor) and the shift in focus.

The tyrant is a child of Pride
Who drinks from his great sickening cup
Recklessness and vanity,
Until he plummets to the dust of hope.
That strong man is not strong.
But let no fair ambition be denied:
May God protect the wrestler for the State
In government, in comely policy,
Who will fear God, and on His ordinance wait. (829-838)
