The purpose of this course is to learn the essential skills of basic Spanish.  Through the study of grammar and vocabulary, students will develop the ability to speak, understand, read and write Spanish.  By the end of the course, students will be able to communicate in Spanish at an intermediate level.

Optional for extra credit: Make a small poster or write a report on "Semana Santa" in Seville, Spain: I recommend that you familiarize yourself with this important annual event by watching one or two Youtube videos first. For maximum credit (up to 40 points), include images (3 minimum, may be drawn and colored or downloaded and printed), references or brief descriptions in Spanish (a minumum of 6 important ideas.) Do not copy and paste. You must understand and learn from your research.  If you choose to present in front of your class, prepare your notes in Spanish. Your presentation  MUST BE COMPREHENSIBLE to your class.
Alternative extra credit assignments:
Using the same criteria, you may prefer to research and present a brief explanation of how either the Moors (North Africans) or the Jews influenced the culture, history, architecture and language of Spain, particularly in southern Spain (which includes Seville) and was controlled by the Moors for almost 8 centuries. If you write about the Jewish history in Spain, you may wish to comment on the "Ladino" language which continued to be spoken after practicing Jews were expelled from Spain, and therefore reflects back on the way Spanish was spoken at the time of Columbus. There are also many excellent videos posted on Youtube to get you started.

  • Take photos, including at least one of yourself next to or in front of one of the attractions.
  • Prepare a poster or a brochure with photos and captions (en español) of your photos.
  • Find out at the Plaza or online about el Dia de los Muertos, and write a one page report on what it represents and describing some of the symbols or objects associated with it. (for example, the sugar skulls, calacas and marigolds.)
  • Present your posters in class and speak briefly in Spanish about what you found out.
