Dear Parents,
DRWC (Developing Readers and Writers Course) has been strategically designed for students who have been assessed to be reading far below grade level. It is a highly scripted program with its own materials and curriculum. Consequently I will be attending a five day training session in September so that I can teach the course effectively. In addition to the prescribed curriculum, SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) will be a component with which to open class. Please assist your child in finding appropriate books of maximum interest for this activity. Consistent reading is the most effective way to improve all skills related to English.
I will be issuing grades for my DRWC students based on the same scale I use for all my classes (points earned are translated on a percentage basis to letter grades as follows: A=90% and above, B=80% and above, C=70% and above, D=60% and above, F= below 60%).
Please make sure that your child brings to class every day: a three-ring binder with lined paper (written work handed in on paper ripped from spiral notebooks will not be accepted), at least 2 pens with blue or black ink, and at least 2 sharpened pencils with erasers, plus their independent reading. Lunch detention will be assigned for failure to bring materials. At home, students will need a 3-hole punch, so that they can keep handouts in their binders, plus a good dictionary.
I will do my best to help your child improve his or her skills sufficiently to reenter mainstream English as quickly as possible; however, an encouraging and supportive climate at home is also very important.
It is my hope that lines of communication between parents and myself remain open so that we can deal with any concerns together before they become problems. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions or any specific information I should know about your child. Just leave a message at the school’s main number above and I will return your call promptly. I am also available for conferences Period Five, and before or after school if necessary.
Thank you for your support. I look forward to an exciting and productive year.

Sincerely,

Mr. Bergquist
