State standards will be addressed through a variety of classroom activities including essays, reports, tests, vocabulary/ note taking as well as public speaking opportunities such as debates, trials, and plays. Grammar and usage will be stranded through all lessons. However, additional material which offers a preview of skills and experiences necessary for AP English course (11th and 12th grade) will also be taught.
TEXTS/SUPPLIES: Students will be issued a consumable workbook and text. They will need them for homework and classwork. In addition, students will need a journal and a public library card as well as a dictionary to complete assignments. Highlighters and/or more than one color of pen may also be of use.
HOMEWORK: Many assignments will be on-going projects with due dates set well in advance. It is the student’s responsibility to pace himself accordingly. Late work will only be accepted for an excused, cleared absence within one week from the absence.
GRADES: Grades are developed from an accumulation of points. Points are awarded based on class assignments such as tests, essays, projects, homework and classwork. Assignments are weighted according to the class time spent teaching the skill and the amount of effort expected of the student. The grading scale is: 90%-A; 80%-B; 70%-60%-D. Failure to accumulate at least 60% of the points possible in a grading period will result in a failing grade.
CLASS RULES: All state laws, District rules, and LACES school rules will be followed. Additional class rules, policies and procedures are attached. Your signature indicates you have read and are aware of these rules.
PARENT CONFERENCES: Parents are always welcome to make an appointment for a conference. Please call the school to leave a message for me, or send a note with your child. While I look forward to working with you to maximize your child's educational experience, keeping track of assignments and clarifying instructional information is the student's responsibility. Conference time is limited. Usually, I can best serve your child's needs by speaking to him directly. I expect this to be a profitable, and hopefully enjoyable, year for your child.
