1. Course Description and Objectives:
Korean 3 is designed to continue practicing in all communication skills with added complexity in formal and informal situations. The class is taught in Korean. Students will understand concrete details of Korean grammar and functions used in daily conversation and will have no difficulty in making daily conversation. Students will expand vocabulary and develop their reading skills such as identifying main ideas, finding the definition of unfamiliar vocabulary from the context, and predicting what information a reading passage might contain through easy literary work. Students will understand current Korean language and culture through movies and dramas and get familiarized with Korean customs and culture. Correct spellings and sentence structure will be stressed in writing.
2. Requirements:
Pencils, and black or blue ballpoint pens, and a pencil sharpener
Color pens for editing
A loose-leaf notebook
A 3-ring binder
English – Korean / Korean – English dictionary
Students’ notebook will be checked periodically for progress and organizational skills. Basic texts include Integrated Korean: Beginning 2 and the workbook. Support materials also include audio CDs, DVDs, and teacher-generated power point presentations and handouts.
3. Homework and Make-up Policy:
Any missed assignment such as class work, quiz, test, and homework, due to absences must be made up within one week from your return date. The student is responsible for making arrangements with the teacher for makeup quizzes and tests. Students earn zero points for quizzes, tests, and homework not made up promptly after an absence. Points missed for class participation and group activities cannot be made up.
Tutoring
Tutoring is available during lunchtime in Rm 167 by appointments. Those students who need to improve their grades or simply to study for quizzes/tests must let the teacher know at least one day in advance. Volunteer tutors may get extra credit upon approval.
4. Grading System
Grades are based on a point system. Your grade will reflect the number of points that you have earned divided by the total possible points.
Grading scale:
90-100% = A; 80-89% = B; 70-79% = C; 60-69% = D; 0-59% = F
There are 5 types of assessments in this class:
Tests & Quizzes – Tests are covered from each chapter and is worth 100 points. Quizzes are assessed from at least one of the elements of speaking, listening, reading, or writing and are worth between 10-30 points.
Class work – Daily work assignments are worth between 5 – 50 points. Class projects and presentations will also be included in this area.
Homework – Most homework assignments are worth between 5 – 20 points.
Notebook – Notebooks will be collected and graded for each 5-week grading period. A student’s binder must include ①단어(vocabulary), ②복습문제(warm-ups), ③노트(notes), ④연습문제(class work), ⑤숙제 (homework), ⑥일기(dairy/journal), and/or ⑦퀴즈(quizzes).
Participation – Students will earn 5 points for daily participation and attendance.
5. Classroom Rules:
1) Follow directions. I cannot teach, nor can anyone else learn in a noisy, out-of-control classroom. Students who are not polite, who talk out, who don’t stay in their seat, or who don’t follow directions will not be successful.
2) Be seated on time and bring textbook and materials to each and every class. (1 point will be deducted each day for not bringing your textbook and workbook).
3) Be neat. Clean up after yourself. Gum, candy, sodas, and other food are prohibited during class time (Only water is allowed.).
4) Raise your hand for permission to speak and to leave your seat. Students are allowed to use the hall pass three times per semester (two bathroom passes are included) with no penalty. After that, 5 points will be deducted from your next quiz/test grade each time you use the hall pass.
5) RESPECT teachers, your classmates, and school property at all times.
The following consequences will occur if a student breaks a rule stated above:
1) Verbal reminder (possible trash pick-up)
2) Contact parents (possible detention)
3) Counselor referral and/or parent conference (possible class suspension)
