1. Course Description and Objectives:
This class is designed to increase communicative proficiency in Spanish. Students will be introduced to vocabulary, grammar, and culture through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic activities. Students will understand and interpret beginning levels of Spanish in the four fundamental areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Emphasis is placed on increasing their feelings, emotions, opinions, and exchange information within a range of topics. They will demonstrate creative, presentational speaking and writing skills on various topics; recognize and appreciate carious aspects of Spanish and Latin cultures; build a functional and motivational base from which future enjoyment of the Spanish can emerge; and make comparisons between Spanish and English. The course integrates the 5Cs (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities) from the National Standards for Foreign Language.
2. Requirements:
Students need a loose-leaf notebook, a 3-ring binder, and color pens for editing, and Spanish to English dictionary (Larousse or Oxford) for this class. Students’ notebook will be checked periodically for progress and organizational skills. Basic textbook include Realidades 1 and Realidades Practice Workbook (Prentice Hall, 2004). Support materials also include audiotapes, DVDs, videotapes, and teacher-generated power-point presentations and handouts.
3. Homework and Make-up Policy:
Any missed assignment, such as class work, quiz, test, and homework, due to absences must be made up within one week from your return date. The student is responsible for making arrangements with the teacher for makeup quizzes/tests. Students earn zero points for quizzes/tests and homework not made up promptly after an absence.
4. Grading System
Grades are based on a point system. Your grade will reflect the number of points that you have earned divided by the total possible points.
Grading scale: 90-100% = A; 80-89% = B; 70-79% = C; 60-69% = D; and 0-59% = F.
