Oliver Patterson wins the Rubincam Youth Award

The Rubincam Youth Award was established in 1986 to honor Milton Rubincam for his many years of service to the National Genealogical Society and to the field of genealogy. These awards encourage and recognize our youth as the next generation of family historians.

Oliver competed in the junior category.  Students in grades 7 to 9 or between the ages of 13 to 15 years are eligible to compete for the award. The award winner receives a plaque, the NGS Home Study Course, and a one-year NGS membership.

Oliver wrote a biography and timeline on his grandfather, Victor Banks, who was a young boy when the bombings over London took place. The biography describes this, the evacuation, his apprenticeship as a bricklayer at the age of 14, the V1 bombs, his eventual emigration to Canada and eventually to Chicago. The timeline helps make the connection between some of the major buildings of the city and Victor's life supporting his family of five children.
