Each of you will simulate a lobby group representing one of the following interests groups relating to energy:
Biomass Coal Geothermal
Hydroelectric Natural Gas Petroleum
Solar Uranium Wind
You will be presenting before the US Department of Energy to receive a portion of the 100 billion dollar budget for energy innovation. You will present your argument to Sec of Energy, Mr. Shows. Your presentation should be no more than 3-5 minutes and should focus on the following components:
Why the government should help your particular industry?
Why your energy source is important to America’s future?
Why your particular industry should be expanded?
Each proposal should contain:
a) Content; clear thesis (policy proposal), supporting evidence, refute arguments
b) Visualization: illustrates and enhances stated arguments (not necessarily visually)
c) Delivery: time (3-5 minutes), eye contact, voice projection, good preparation
d) Citations: includes at least 5 RELIABLE sources and is in correct MLA format.
Grading Rubric
Argument (60 pts)

3 -- Case for energy source has been more than adequately made. Good counterarguments included
2 -- Case for energy source was made with some convincing arguments. Some counterarguments made
1 -- Case for energy source was made with few convincing arguments. Few evidence and citations provided. Small number of counterarguments provided
Evidence (40 pts)
4 – Evidence provided for all arguments and counters; evidence highly reliable
3 -- Evidence provided for most arguments and counters; evidence mostly reliable
2 – Evidence provided for some arguments and counters; evidence somewhat reliable

Miller-Urey Expose:
We will start reviewing some of the most controversial topics in AP
Biology.
For this assignment, we will be doing a Case Study on the famous Miller-Urey experiment.
FIRST WE WILL WATCH VIDEO IN CLASS
This assignment has three components:
#1. Complete the on-line investigation to experience the Miller-Urey experiment for yourself 26: How did life Begin?
#2. Find an article from a media source (non-encyclopedic) that gives a viewpoint on the experiment. It needs to be unique, so duplications will result in 1pt deduction off all copies. Provide a summary of the article and a copy of the link, (NO ATTACHMENTS)
#3. Answer the following questions:
1. Which results from the experiment support the theory that life was created
from inorganic matter?
2. What are the controls in this experiment?
3. What are some of the problems in using this experiment to promote a specific theory of life?
4. If you wanted to improve on the Miller-Urey experiment, what changes would you make to the procedure or design of the experiment? Give a reason for each change that you come up with?

Investigations in Science Part 1: The Risk of High Cholesterol
After reading the attached Powerpoint, investigate the following claims for validity:
The cause of side-effects from cholesterol lowering drugs
The biological link between saturated fats and CHD
Health benefits from eating unsaturated fats
For this assignment, you have to do the following for each of the above :
1. State what your opinion was of the issue prior to the viewing of "Oiling of America"
2. Cite two RELIABLE sources that supports and goes against your initial stance summarizing their arguments. (Not wikipedia!)
3. Analyze your current position on the issue. How has it changed? How has it remained the same?
4. What action will you implement, if any, based on your research?

Plant analogy due:
You will email a plant analogy with AT LEAST 8 plant cells types (Use Chjap 35 as a reference)
You must include an explanation for each of the cell types you pick, making sure that you demonstrate understanding of its function within the analogy component. FOCUS on the PRIMARY FUNCTION of each cell type as it relates to the plant and make sure that it is CLEARLY linked in your analogy.
ANALOGY: A plant IS LIKE A SPORTING EVENT
EX: The stadium is like the periderm because just as a stadium provides support, protection, and structure for the sporting event to take place, the the periderm provides support and structure for the plant.
SCORING GUIDE
12.5 pts for each correct analogy. Scoring is based explaining the primary function of the cell and connecting it to your analogy.

Submit SWH and Animal Lab. Be sure to answer the following Questions:
Ethology is the study of animal behavior. An animal’s behavior is its response to sensory input. There are three types of behaviors: orientation, agonistic, and mating.
Orientation behaviors take the animal to its most favorable environment. Taxis is when an animal moves toward or away from a stimulus. Taxis is often characterized by light, heat, moisture, sound, or chemicals. Kinesis is another type of movement that involves orientation. Kinesis is a movement that is random and doesn’t involve a stimulus. So an animal would respond to light by moving everywhere in random directions.
Agonistic behavior is when animals respond to each other in aggressive or submissive movements. Like the hair on dogs backs when they get ready to fight. Another excellent example is the Betta fish, which is sometimes studied in labs.
Mating behaviors are activities that involve finding, courting, and mating with a member of the same species. An example would be a peacock fluffing up its feathers to attract females.
1. Based on the above definitions, which option(s) bests explains the behavior that your saw within your experiment. PROVIDE EVIDENCE FOR EACH TYPE OF BEHAVIOR IDENTIFIED.
2. What structural component do you think is most responsible for the behavior exhibited in this experiment by the mealworms?
3. Provide an example for one of the three types of taxes listed below. Provide THREE additional examples of different types of taxes that exist in nature along with a definition of each
a. phototaxis
b. chemotaxis
c. hydrotaxis

Study for the test for Chap 22-24 on Friday (With NB Qs complete)
Email SWH for Lab (text only)
Work on your Lab Design assigment.
There appears to have been some confusion on the Lab write-up so I'm going to give you some guidelines to help address some of the issues that I've discussed.
Make sure that you identify the type of taxis in your experiment and redesign your experiment based on actually being able to execute the procedure in class. I will be providing the lifeform. If you are unclear on the different types of animal response, use the book or an encyclopedia to discover different examples of Taxis.
Also make sure this is a controlled experiment, so that you have one variable clearly designed and so that your hypothesis can be clearly identified as either proven or unproven. Provide a detailed (doesn't need to be elaborate) lab write-up with all info needed to execute protocol successfully.
I will notify ahead of time when these labs will be done in class. These labs should be original, don't just copy the procedure of someone else's lab or experiments. Try to look at some aspect of animal behavior that you don't already know the answer. This assignment is not a priority, so you don't need to send this to me until I list it on the website. The score on the redo will be averaged with the original score on the assignment.

Summer Assignment
To Be Emailed to me by the Sept 5th:
Summer Reading Assignment
You will have to Read Chapters 22-25 (Unit 4), Chapters 1-5 and Chapters 50-55 (Unit 8)
I expect for you to outline those chapters on paper, expect a test on this material within the first week on Chapters 1-5, and subsequent weeks on 22-25.
You will also be responsible for designing a experiment that will test how a change in stimuli can create a taxis with respect to animal behavior.
You will need to decide what your variable will be, make sure that you identify the control, and make sure that it is an experiment that is feasible and would not endanger the life of the organism. Reference Unit 8 if you have any questions on Animal Behavior. Also make sure you have the major components of the scientific method covered.
Also, after the first day of class, please make sure that you take the time to add yourself to the Yahoo group. Do not submit a request before hand as some of you will be dropped due to failure to complete summer assignment.
